24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring measures your blood pressure while you go about your normal daily activities, giving a more accurate picture than a single reading taken in the clinic.

The test is carried out over 24 hours using a small, digital blood pressure monitor worn on a belt around your waist and connected to a cuff on your upper arm. The device is compact and comfortable, allowing you to continue your usual routine and sleep normally while wearing it.

Why is ambulatory blood pressure monitoring recommended?

By taking regular readings throughout the day and night, this test helps me understand how your blood pressure changes over time. I may recommend it for several reasons:

  • To check whether high blood pressure readings in the clinic are higher than they are at home (known as “white coat hypertension”)
  • To assess how well your blood pressure medication is working throughout the day
  • To see whether your blood pressure remains high at night, which may mean your treatment needs adjusting
