Types of Heart Valve Disease
Heart valve problems usually affect blood flow in one of two ways:
This occurs when a valve does not open fully, making it harder for blood to flow through the heart. The heart has to work harder to pump blood past the narrowed valve.
This happens when a valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak backwards in the wrong direction. Over time, this can place extra strain on the heart.
Both valve stenosis and valve regurgitation can cause symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, chest discomfort, dizziness, or palpitations, although some patients may have few or no symptoms initially.
