Stress Echocardiogram

A stress echocardiogram is an ultrasound test of the heart performed while your heart is working harder, or “under stress.” The test helps me assess how well your heart copes with increased activity.
During the test, you may be asked to exercise on a treadmill or an exercise bike. Alternatively, I may give you medication to make your heart beat faster and stronger. The exercise starts gently and gradually becomes more challenging. I will take images of your heart either during exercise or immediately afterwards to see how it functions under stress.
Why might a stress echocardiogram be recommended?
The aim of the test is to see how your heart responds when it needs more blood. If a part of the heart is not receiving enough blood due to a narrowed or blocked artery, that area may not contract as well as the rest of the heart when under stress. This helps me identify areas of reduced blood flow and assess overall heart function.
